Getting Started
───────────────
[If you have a previous version of Guidelines installed on your machine, see
the "Migration Considerations" section below before continuing.]
If you have the electronically distributed version of Guidelines, you can
either:
1. Create 3 diskettes by unzipping each of the files onto a separate
diskette, or
2. Unzip the contents of all three files into a directory on your hard
drive, and perform the installation from there.
If you have created three diskettes or received the diskettes as manufactured
by JBA, to install Guidelines insert the first installation disk (made from
GBASE1.ZIP) into your floppy drive.
Type:
[X]:\install
where [X] is the drive you are installing from, e.g. "a:\install". Include
the directory name if you are installing from a directory on the hard drive.
Press ENTER and the install program will start and display an initial
banner dialog. Press the OK button (or ENTER) and you may then begin
selecting options from the installation menu.
Selecting The Install Path
──────────────────────────
From the installation menu, selecting the 'Directories...' menu option which
will display a dialog providing the ability to modify the directories in
which Guidelines will be installed. The source directory will default to the
path from where the installation program was run and the target directory
will default to [Y]:\GUIDE (where [Y] is your boot drive).
If you want to install Guidelines in another directory (or on another
drive), modify the target directory to the path required. The installation
program will ask you if you wish to create the directory when the target
directory does not already exist.
If the nominated directory already contains an existing copy of Guidelines,
the installation program will prompt you to confirm the over writing of
the Guidelines system files. Note that any existing user GUI files within
the old Guidelines directory will not be destroyed or modified.
Installation Options
────────────────────
When Guidelines finishes installing the software, it will automatically
create a Workplace Shell folder for the software (this is the default).
If you wish, this may be prevented by unchecking the 'Create WPS Folder'
option.
You may also optionally prevent the automatic updating of the CONFIG.SYS
from this dialog. Guidelines requires LIBPATH and various environment
settings to be set correctly before it can be run. If you are installing
over an old copy of Guidelines, you may wish to turn this feature off.
You can also optionally select that the changes which would normally be
made to CONFIG.SYS be written to a separate file (created in the target
directory) which you can then apply yourself after running the install
program.
Installing
──────────
Once you have selected an installation directory and set the appropriate
install options, you should select the 'Install...' menu item from the
'Install' submenu to begin the install. Before the files are actually copied
to disk, a registration dialog will be presented which allows you to
personally customize your copy of Guidelines. Enter your name and company
(if applicable) and your registration number (if you are a registered user).
For non-registered users, a blank registration number will enable
full-functionality for the base product only. Once these details are
entered, and the OK (or ENTER key) is pressed, a status dialog is displayed
which will show the install status as the files are copied to disk.
Once the installation is complete, you may need to reboot your machine
so that any CONFIG.SYS file changes can take effect. The install program will
notify you if this is required (i.e. if changes have been made to the
CONFIG.SYS file).
Installing Extensions
─────────────────────
Guidelines control packs may be installed via the 'Install Extensions...'
menu item. Extension packs are separately available on their own
disks. To install an extension, you should set the appropriate directories
and install options in the same manner as for the base Guidelines product.
Running Guidelines
──────────────────
After a successful installation you may invoke Guidelines by typing "Guide"
and pressing the Enter key at a command prompt, or via the WorkPlace
object created (optionally) during the install.
If you are new to Guidelines, a "Getting Started" online document and tutorial
may be found in the Documentation folder (if installed) or readable as
GETSTART.INF in the DOC directory (using VIEW.EXE).
If you are a user of an previous version of Guidelines, a "New Features"
online document describes what has been added in the 2.1A release. This
may also be found in the Documentation folder (if installed) or readable as
NEWFEAT.INF in the DOC directory (using VIEW.EXE).
Migration Considerations
────────────────────────
If you have a previous version of Guidelines installed on your machine, it
is recommended that you do not install the current release over it. This is
because the files in previous versions may not have counterparts in the
current release, and might not be erased or overwritten by a new installation.
Also, the directory structure has changed slightly from previous releases.
In this case, you might rename the existing top level directory, install to
a new directory with a different name, or delete the previous version before
installing. Should you use either of the first two approaches, you can then
move or copy your GUI project files to the new GUI directory, and convert
them to the new format.
It is recommended that you make certain you have updated versions of all the
Guidelines Controls and Extensions which you use in your projects before
replacing your current setup. Older versions of the controls are not
compatible with the current release. As a registered customer, you will be
automatically sent the updates, free of charge by JBA.
GUI files created with previous versions of Guidelines can be converted to
work with the current release in two ways.
1. The install program can convert a number of files, either at install
time or later.
2. Guidelines itself will perform a conversion on individual files as they
are loaded into the editor.
Conversion is a one way process, and once converted, the GUI files will not
be readable by earlier versions of Guidelines.
Guidelines is generally upward compatible with its predecessors, but in
this release the DestroyThread() function has been removed (see the "New
Features" document for details). You will therefore need to rework code
which contains this function.
System Requirements
───────────────────
Guidelines requires that you have OS/2 Version 2.1 or higher already
installed on your computer. For information about setting up OS/2 on your
computer, see the instructions in your OS/2 package.
The minimum hardware requirements for running Guidelines are the same
as the normal OS/2 requirements. However the recommended configuration
for Guidelines development are as follows:
■ Numeric coprocessor
■ 15" or greater display monitor
■ 8514, SVGA or XGA graphics adapter running at 1024x768 resolution
■ 16MB of memory
■ 30MB of available swap space
These are the recommendations for using the IBM C Set++ compiler, and may be
reduced if you will be using a different vendors tools.
Guidelines assumes that you have a supported C++ compiler and the OS/2
Toolkit installed on your hard drive. While applications can be designed
without the C++ compiler, the source code generated cannot be compiled
into an executable unless a compiler is present.
Currently supported compilers are:
1. For OS/2 Development
────────────────────
Borland C++ for OS/2 V1.01
IBM CSet++ V2.1
Watcom C++ V9.5
1. For Windows Development
───────────────────────
Borland C++ V3.1 for DOS/Windows
